Caravan Road Log:

Classic Neons Light Up the Night |
The veteran Route 66 traveler will recall the famous Motel Rows of many small towns that they have gone through. After a long day of navigating the winding highway one of the most welcome sites seen along the Mother Road were the glitzy, dazzling and colorful neons of the motels and cafes. They beckoned to the weary traveler. The profusion of these colorful beacons of the highway brought about the phrase "Motel Row" and even today along the Interstates the tradition continues. Gallup was a town that catered to the traveler and those neons of yesteryear can still be found. Many of the old motels are closed now but those that remain still exhibit, though somewhat worse for the wear, those precious icons of road art. Kevin and I took a side trip to photograph some of these rapidly vanishing pieces of Americana. Take a photo tour down Route 66 in Gallup at night... | ||||
The Gallup Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center has a modern neon done in the classic style. What better way to start a neon tour! |

The colorful and brightly-lit neons give the Motel Rows a holiday feel don't they? |
